Title: Rainy Day Lessons
Summary: When unexpected circumstances come about, sometimes there is nothing to do but laugh. (Apparently.)
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: General disregard for human life.
Words: 538
"Why does it always have to rain in this stupid city?" Rae snarled to herself, adjusting the weight of her backpack on her shoulders as she trudged down the street towards home. School had been appallingly uneventful for the last week and a half, what with Courtney finally having "transferred" due to "family reasons". At the very least she wouldn't have to put up with the girl's disruptive fits any longer - although they had been amusing at first, it eventually just became tedious to listen to.
With her thoughts wrapped up in the breakdown of her classmate, Rae barely even noticed the young man running by until he barreled right into her. She bit back her snarl and put on her victim's face of shock-and-horror, but there was no time for the man to react to it - his feet were all in a jumble from the crash and, before she knew it, he was lurching off the sidewalk and into the front of an oncoming bus.
Rae flinched at the squeal of tires, horns blaring, the fear behind her eyes growing stronger as she became rather startled. What had even happened?
She shook herself off, brushing the mud and wet grainy sidewalk debris off of her pants as she stood up. By now, several passersby had gone to check on the man, some even getting out of their cars to dial away on their cellphones in hopes of getting him some sort of assistance. Behind the blankness of her gaze, Rae grinned inside. What fools, they all were, worrying about him like that when it was so obvious there was nothing left for him. At least it hadn't been her getting thrown into the road like that.
And, not so surprisingly, considering the plastered state of the man and the horrified looks from the man who had attempted CPR, it seemed he was dead. She grinned to herself slightly, feeling the shocked thoughts of the witnesses begin to assail her. She pushed back, not only to give her mind some degree of separation, but to give their feelings a hard twist. One weaker-willed older woman began to bawl from the strength of the emotion and Rae had to cover her smile with her hand.
Chuckling to herself, she walked away, putting her hands in her pockets to ward from the cold.... Although, strangely enough, there seemed to be something in there, something other than her trusty cellphone. She pulled it out curiously - a piece of paper. It hadn't been there before... Had the man given it to her when he bumped into her?
With a shrug, she unfolded the note, revealing one neatly printed word: "Forever."
For a moment, Rae simply stood there in shocked silence, puzzling the peculiar note. Then, with a great burst of air, she let loose a string of laughter. Forever? She mused. Preposterous. There was no such thing as something eternal.
She trudged home, all amusement at the situation sinking. What an idiot, dying for a stupid cause like that. It was almost like he was trying to be heroic or, or meaningful somehow. What a waste of space - it was probably all for the better that he'd died.
